trombone

In January 2023, Jonathan Randazzo was appointed principal trombone of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He officially begins his new position at the beginning of the 2023–24 season.

Prior to his new appointment, Randazzo served as assistant principal trombone of the North Carolina Symphony, beginning in 2011, and won that position while pursuing his bachelor-of-music degree at the New England Conservatory. During the 2017–18 season, he performed as acting principal trombone with the symphony. In August 2017, Randazzo was appointed second trombone of The Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. Since the summer of 2021, he’s served as the orchestra’s acting principal trombone.

A devoted teacher, Randazzo held the position of adjunct trombone professor at NC State University from 2015 to 2022 and is currently in high demand as a private trombone instructor. Over the past several years, he’s been hired as a guest artist-clinician at DePaul University, UNC School of the Arts, Gardner-Webb University, and East Carolina and Appalachian state universities. He’s also a founding member of the Santa Fe Trombone Summit, an educational trombone workshop featuring master classes, sectionals, and performances.

Jonathan Randazzo’s trombone teachers and mentors include Norman Bolter, former second trombone of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Joseph Alessi, principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic; James Markey, bass trombone of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and Willard Sprague, a local pedagogue on Long Island, New York. While in high school, Randazzo attended the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School.
